When unwanted particles enter your home, your filter’s job is to trap them and let clean air through. However, over time those particles will build up, causing less air to come through and disrupting the energy efficiency of your air conditioning system. There are four steps to clean your filter and avoid loss of efficiency.
1. Removing the Filter
Before removing your filter, you’ll want to make sure your system is off to avoid letting particles into your home unfiltered. Then, with a screwdriver, remove the filter and inspect it for any damage or unusual spotting. If you do spot any damage, you should replace it with a new one. If not, then it’s time to clean.
2. Vacuuming Your Filter
Now, you will vacuum your filter to remove the majority of dirt from the surface. Use a hose attachment to gently clean your filter and try to avoid pressing down hard on the filter and ripping the material. After you’re finished vacuuming the filter, check it again for any damage you may have missed. Once you’ve ensured it’s still in working condition, it’s time to wash it.
3. Washing the Filter
The next step is to use a mixture of water and white vinegar to soak your filter for an hour. Soaking it will clear the areas that the vacuum couldn’t reach and remove any blockage in the filter. After the soak, it’s time to lightly rinse your filter and clear the rest of the dirt. Finally, ensure that the filter is completely dry before returning it to the unit to avoid any issues of mold.
4.Reinstalling the Filter
At this point, your filter should be clean and free of particles that would restrict clean air from flowing into your home. If you inspect your filter at this stage and still see dark spots clinging to the material, it’s usually a sign that you should replace it with a new one. Once you’ve verified that the filter is clean and in working condition, you’re all clear to use your screwdriver once again and return it to the unit.
